All the options where to begin

So Blender is installed, GIMP is ready to pump out and play with some textures. Time to get rolling. And then you get this :

First step would be getting these damn icons bigger and figuring out what the heck I should be using or not. Also starting working and finally learning things like UV mapping and making some decent textures work. Trying to learn and get what actual bump-mapping is, how to improve whatever you have got already and implementing it in the right ways. After that animation \o/

Luckily Youtube has more than enough material to play with and get things going. Texturing and getting the right models is the first step in making something even remotely believable so better start here. Hopefully will be able to get some stuff actually textured and ready this weekend. Will post what tutorials I have followed and what  I have taken from them.

First challenges arise

After a day full of playing and setting things up you quickly realize that challenges are everywhere. Right now after boasting about it should not be that hard to install Unity or Unreal Engine 4 it turns out that it is actually not that easy as well. So after a day of Elementary I am already looking at KVM and other VM solutions to the issue that is called Windows based software. Got my office set up. Browsers are more than fine. Mail client is one of the best ever out there (well that I am aware of at least). But damn you games industry and your Windows mindedness!

Next up is looking at Oculus SDK and how that one wants to play with me. But I am very afraid I might end up with a Win 7 virtual setup and just do my modeling/texturing in Elementary. Cannot wait to be able to finally have this all set up and start working on some actual developing again. In the mean time I will be downloading and playing around with Blender, I never really got the hang of texturing models in the right way. And even though it can be very tricky it cannot be rocket science. Luckily I also have some night-shifts coming up next weekend. Dozens of hours to dig into the magic of modeling and texturing. There is only so much pixel work that one can appreciate.

And thus we begin

It is interesting how new things get made. Usually comes from solving a problem or filling a need that has been there all along. Breaking new grounds with things that just seem to last. I feel its a great time to start something that I wanted for a long time. A lovely way to break old habits and start great new ones. Stop being distracted with all the different impulses we encounter daily and redefine what is needed and what goals we actually are chasing.

A small introduction would be in place I guess. I am Michael a 30 year old IT guy with a passion for everything that creates and gives experiences. Always have had issues with focusing on the things I want and get distracted by the things everybody gets distracted by nowadays. No more procrastinating and finding a way to get the focus back. It will be tough but hopefully by writing it off and finding other adventurers we will achieve.

Starting fresh starts with getting a new workspace. I am just finished installing Elementary OS. A lovely Ubuntu based OS that will look and feel familiar to OSX. So far it has been a great experience and will remove a lot of the clutter I get with my lovely old pal Windows. It will take some time getting used to all the different options but so far I have found all that I need. I possibly would need to figure out how to get my Unity working on this but after reading State of Unity in Linux it cannot be too far away now. After that I would need to find out how I can get my Oculus DK2 working so I can start playing around with my other hobby game development. Creating actual persistence.

But before all that it is time to work some magic on the design of this new page. Time to do some coloring and painting. Making it more like home. Will update every 2 days or so with new challenges, new found riches and new habits to create. Time to be persistent.
